Interesting. Jobs stole his ideas from Xerox and Gates stole his ideas from Gary. Facebook did the same thing. Seems like all of the "genius" rich people are really thieves.

Gary and his wife screwed up, that is not Bill Gates fault. Gary was given a heads up and ignored it, the rest is history.

This is an old old story. Engineers are rarely good business men and business men are rarely engineers .

Back at Uni, my lecturer would say: "a good programmer writes good code, a great programmer steals good code"

I am old enough to remember hacking the BIOS of CP/M 2,2 - By the way, it wasn't called "Control Program for Microcomputers:" but "Control Program/Monitor'. In addition although came out with CP/M 86 it was a failure and Bill Gates' first iterations of the OS for IBM, were PC-DOS NOT MS-DOS. - Lets correct the history please - Otherwise the video was a pleasure to watch and too me back to my years of working with CP/M 2.2

Who knows how many geniuses like him got lost to history :/

Now that's why I'm not buying a private plane...I may just miss the opportunity of a lifetime while flying around.

"Gates, being deterministic and opportunistic in nature, was never going to give Gary a second chance."

Gates SENT IBM to Gary Kildall, he CALLED him to give a heads up that someone IMPORTANT was coming and that he should "treat them right" and Kildall was not at home.

But it's Gates' fault who seized the opportunity when IBM went back to him. OK then...

Gary Lives a wonderful Life,
A life near to Nature, and not resulting into the abhomination of AI

In my feed the title of this video says "Was Windows Stolen?" Yet this video is about a 40 year old story about DOS that everyone already knows. Nothing to do with Windows.

“When IBM came to call, Gary was out flying one of his private planes on business”! Yea real frickin sob story! 😂

Proof that real genius is a curse, not a blessing. The cemeteries are filled with the bodies of those who were killed by unscrupulous people with superior business skills.

So, Bill is the Thomas Edison to Gary's Nikola Tesla. Not as intuitive, just a bit more cut-throat.

Eh, he should have been home instead of jack assing around.

Wow, I haven't heard that Cocteau Twins song that you used to finish off the video in over 25 years. Time for me to go on the pirate bay I think. See how far technology has progressed but people are still the same, stealing other people stuff just like Bill

In two years , IBM outsold Apple to be the number one computer manufacturers.... erm Commodore outsold both.

This video is kind of misleading.

1. QDOS was not a "ripoff" of CP/M. QDOS was created by a company called Seattle Computer Products with the specific purpose of having a CP/M-compatible API - that is to mimic the behavior of CP/M so that software written for CP/M would run on it. Microsoft later licensed QDOS from this company (for actual money), ported it to the IBM-PC and licensed the resulting PC-DOS to IBM and whoever else built an IBM-PC compatible machine and wanted a ready-made operating system for it. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/86-DOS)

The true genius of Bill Gates (and the reason why Gary Kildall would never become him) was having the foresight to strike the right deal with the right companies at the right time to get in on the ground floor of a phenomenon that was to change the world.

2. MS-DOS would not "eventually become Windows", Windows is a completely different product that initially ran on top of MS-DOS and later became independent from it. Saying that MS-DOS "became" Windows is like saying that you can turn a bicycle into a car based on the fact that both have wheels.

Well Gary had the opportunity but failed to grasp it.. In fact Bill was very very fair by introducing Garry to IBM. Bill did nothing wrong...
