The Dune Saga, which is set Approximately 20,000 years in our future, revolves around the evolution of mankind both physically and mentally over the course of several thousands of years. Book one introduces the Character Paul Atreides, the result of a breeding program which had been going on for many Generations, orchestrated by the Bene Gesserit sisterhood a secretive and powerful order of women who manipulated the inhabitant of the Imperium through use of their many mysterious skills. Paul is the central character of the early novels. In Dune mankind has spread out to more than 10,000 worlds. The empire was dominated by the Landsraad, which consisted of many feuding noble houses, and was lead by the Padishaw Emperor himself.

Subverting the expectations as a phrase is forever changed... You can say it kinda forgot it's true meaning and subverted all of our expectations.

Without Dune, you wouldn't have Star Wars and Warhammer 40K. Mucho respect.

I find ecological aspect of 'Dune' very compelling. It is one of the major themes of the book, but rarely mentioned in any overview videos. All life revolves around water (or rather absence of it), preservation of water (water is even reclaimed from your breath), all life forms on Arrakis are evolved to adapt to these harsh conditions. I can say that water is the second axis of the book, first one being spice melange. Both of these axes intersect at a single point - to make spice melange you need water as well. In terms of Christianity (blood of the Christ and eating Eucharist) water can be compared to blood and spice to Eucharist. Eucharist even having some more ancient roots to consumption of psychedelic materials to reach higher states of consciousness (like some mushroom caps consumed by ancient societies), but this is whole new topic for another day ;)

.
Another aspect is religion. You can literally find various aspects of all current major religions, main ones being islam+zen Buddhism. The more you are acquainted with various religions the more details you recognize in the book.

.
Also eugenics motif is very strong with Bene Geserit breeding program, trying to breed 'super-human' over the thousands of generations from selected gene-pools and traits. Including very strict conditioning of each Bene Geserit woman, being like a vessel to produce 'all seeing, all knowing' human

I've read all the books apart from Winds of Dune
The saga is one of the best and honest interpretations of humanity's potential and the risks involved with our evolution

I've never thought of Dune as an endeavor to read. I suppose it is. I've always preferred deep, complex, and philosophical fiction. Dune along with asoiaf are some of my favorite series of all time. Thanks for the awesome production value and passion.
