Imagine if this was an Iconic Arms.

“The explosive barrel. Cylindrical. Death in a can. Short temper.”

When Yahtzee visited Valve’s old offices about 10 years ago, he found it hilarious they were right across from a Crate and Barrel.

"So I emailed John Romero and asked him."

And he responded with about what I expected tbh. He just thought they would be cool, so he put them in. Sounds like early ID lol

This video is great, but it forgets one absolutely crucial historical element that sits right in the middle of the entire tangle of where video game explosive barrels came from. It's so obvious that it can be overlooked, but shouldn't ever be excluded from a discussion of video game culture, or even general modern western culture. One particular man's influence is immeasurable, and yet you forgot him.

First there were the post-WW2 era action movies. One of the most iconic being Dambusters (1955). The generation of kids watching that movie grew up to be the dominant creatives of the 1970s, whose imaginations blended scenes from that film with those of heroic western/Tarzan/military/sci-fi/fantasy serials of the 1950s and 1960s.

Then one fateful day in 1974, one emerging central figure amongst those inspired creatives, a certain Mr. Steven Spielberg, protested with the eternal words: "No. We CANNOT just kill the shark. We HAVE TO BLOW IT UP!"

You forgot Jaws. "Smile you sonovabi*ch!"

Jaws. Is why. The explosive barrels. Exist.

This man made a 20 minute video on explosive barrels, I'm 100% for it

Damn, was hoping to see Red Alert in there with it's barrels. Especially when you talked about it giving a "strategic" element.

We love it when you do Iconic arms. There's so much more content there. Your telling of history is quite interesting and entertaining.

When I think of any kind of explosive barrel, I just think of those “FLAMMABLE” ones in Half-Life 2. They’re so iconic to me for some reason.
Edit: That's a lot of likes. Heh, seems like I'm not the only one. Also, I didn't get to the part in the video when I made this comment, so I thought it was quite funny when the video mentions it shortly after I did.

Ohhh man there's too many things to say about this AWESOME PRODUCTION!!

I played almost every damn game on here growing up! You brought in Operation Wolf, Cabal AND P.O.W.!!!

THEN YOU BROUGHT UP SPIKES FOR A SECOND, AND THE WHOLE TIME I WAS SAYING TO MYSELF, "I WISH THIS GUY WOULD MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT SPIKES!!"

One of my favorite memories of NES frustrations was seeing my brother lose his cool over MegaMan II exclaiming, "NINTENDO'S OBSESSION WITH SPIKES!!" LOLOLOL

THIS WAS PERFECT AND THANK YOU FOR THE TIME YOU PUT INTO THIS!!

I find it funny that modern barrels don't even need the "flammable" or "danger" signage anymore.
We're so used to the idea of red barrel = explosion that it's become an instinct.

Nice incorporation of the Half-Life: Alyx clip which I believe is a last minute addition.
