In 1999, groups of open source software users staged an international protest against Microsoft. They demanded a refund for something they didn't want, but were forced to pay for: Microsoft Windows 98. Today's video examines one of these protests, which occurred in California's Silicon Valley, and the battle that these users fought to get their money back.

20 years has passed since that day and the Linux desktop has exploded to nearly 2% market share. Yes that is sarcasm. And yes, I am a Linux user.

Wow, that was nice of Microsoft to provide a welcome table with refreshments. You’ll NEVER see that at any of the public protests today. Such a shame, it’s like we forget that we’re all human and in this world together even if we don’t all agree on everything.

The funny thing is that without Linux the IT world would not be the same as it is today.. Even Microsoft/Apple use linux servers for their backend

That controversy is the reason "Internet Explorer Is Evil" website is born, and still alive today.

Lol. They couldn't walk up the stairs to get their refunds?

Elevator doesn't work, looks like we're done here, boys!

What's up with the American flag? Last time I checked, Linux was a Finnish invention.

I use windows but I can understand the frustration of the linux users, especially with regards to laptop purchases. It's easy to build your own desktop but laptops are all proprietary so you generally can't just "build a laptop". They shouldn't have to pay for a pre-installed operating system on a laptop if they don't want that OS. Why couldn't the manufacturers just make a few computers that didn't have an OS and sell them at a slight discount?

Watching this video really humbled me. Being a Linux user for 4 years and having installed multiple distros over the years (currently running latest Ubuntu with Budgie desktop), I really appreciate all the work these guys have done to make the Linux experience what it is today. It is through the pro-active measures taken by people like these that have made it easier than ever to simply download a distro disk, run the installation script and have a new Linux operating system running in no time. If not for them, the media (and the general public) would not even be able to comprehend that something else other than OSX and Windows could exist as an operating system.

Here is to the ones who paved the way for open source! Here is to Donna for reading the EULA! Here is to Linux for giving open source a voice!
I salut all Linux users out there! Long live Linux!
