Mother's Basement

Geoff Thew, professional shitbag, makes a living analyzing anime and other pop culture from the comfort of his mother's basement. Well, okay, actually he lives in a nice apartment now, but don't tell anyone, alright? He's known for his detailed breakdowns of the hidden secrets in anime openings, his fight scene analysis, and the Public Service Anime series, which provides helpful advice for everyday problems, like being caught up in a harem, or being transported to another world. Join him every Tuesday and Saturday for deep dives into art that will give you a new appreciation for your favourite anime, video games, and films. Check out his second channel, Basement Pals, for vlogs, podcasts, and gaming content: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuuipOVsCE1YfxQFgXKxpbQ

Black Lives Matter. Nobody should have to fear execution for moving their hands wrong at a traffic stop, or because they got a counterfeit 20 back in their change. Yet that is the horrifying reality faced by People of Colour in America every single day. Until that changes – until police, as an institution, undergo revolutionary reform to root out racism and abolish misconduct, militarization, and brutality – Black America, and North America as a whole (Canada, sadly, included) will never truly know peace. This isn’t just about George Floyd. It’s not just about Breonna Taylor, or Ahmaud Arbery, or Regis Korchinski-Paquet, or David McAttee. It’s about all of them, and Eric Garner. Treyvon Martin. Michael Brown. Tanisha Anderson. Philando Castile. Janet Wilson. It’s about the countless Black victims of police violence and bigotry whose names we’ll never know, and it’s about all of the Black kids who will lose their lives tomorrow, if systemic white supremacy is not torn down today. Nobody wants to see their community erupt into chaos and violence – least of all the brave people marching in hopes of saving their family, friends and neighbours from the present inevitability of police abuse. It is tragic to see riots and looting breaking out across what should be the land of the free – we can all agree on that – but never forget who cast the first stone. Who fired the first shot – and the second, and the hundredth. Who pressed their knee into whose neck. Who gassed and bludgeoned and pelted peaceful demonstrators until they could take the pressure no longer. Who holds ALL the power here. The Black folk fighting to upend the boots on their backs are not to blame. They deserve only your support. You can show that by marching with them, if you’re able, by amplifying Black voices and spreading evidence of police brutality through your social media, and by donating: Split funding for racial justice organizations: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/ab_...Split funding for protestor bail funds: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/bai...NYMag Donation list: https://nymag.com/strategist/article/... I initially wrote this message for a video, but I wasn't able to get one done this week, and I didn't want to wait any longer to say something this important. Since community posts don't reach as many people, I'm still planning to include this in the next video I release, which will hopefully be out by next saturday.

My latest video has been stricken down by the copyright gods, but luckily, if you need more cute anime girls in your life (and also some equally cute endangered animals), Yazy has you covered with her new video about Mew Mew Power!

We did it! 1 Million Basement Dwellers! It's getting a little crowded down here, but I'm grateful for each and every one of you! I made a big statement over on twitter (https://twitter.com/G0ffThew/status/1...But if you're YouTube-only, here's what it says: 5 years ago (to the day, if you take out leap years) I began foisting my anime opinions onto YouTube. Today, mother's basement has officially joined the million sub club. When I started I never dreamed I'd reach this point. TBH, part of me still doesn't believe it's happening. So much has changed in the last 5, years. Doing YouTube has connected me to so many wonderful people I'd never have met otherwise - the most wonderful of all being the love of my life @yyyazy. Without her encouragement, support, and nurturing, this would still be just a dream. I also would never have gotten here without the talented editors who've helped me make stuff over the years. So thank you @treylar @HeyZKay @MrNiesGuy @jab50yen @AdamnatorStudio @WhatsWithGames @heavyxeyed @BroodMeister and @PedanticRomantc. But more than anyone, the people I need to thank most are you, my fans. None of my work would mean anything if you guys didn't tune in to watch it, and seeing you continue the conversation in the comments and elsewhere is what motivates me to keep sharing my thoughts. I know I'm not the best at interacting with you all on a regular basis, but that's only because I'm not great at interacting with people in general. But doing this has really helped me come out of my shell, and I can't thank you all enough for watching and listening!

It's Oscar night, and after briefly being less relevant when they broken clocked spiderverse last year, this video is once more just as relevant as ever! Also congrats, Toy Story 4, for winning this year's Disney award!

Happy Saturday guys! We're still in the middle of the move, so it may be a while until the next video, but that's exactly why the editors and I made the last one so long, and also good. Which it is. Like Re:Zero. F*** you, fight me, etc. etc. But seriously, this is one of the best, most in-depth review-things I've ever written, so of you haven't seen it yet, it's definitely worth the 40 minute investment. You can trust me - I made it!

Merry Christmas, best boys and girls! There won't be any videos this week, because I'm hard at work on my roasts of the Worst Anime of 2019. So while you're waiting in no doubt rapt anticipation, please take some time to revisit and enjoy last year's list!
